In targeting your website to your searchers, you first need to know how your potential customers search the web for what they need. Some people may take a stab at what they think your website might be, while others will look in directories, or go straight to a search engine they trust for the answer.
Just think about the last time you wanted to look up a website. Maybe you had seen an advertisement on TV or on the back of a bus and you wanted more information about the product or service. You probably remember what the company did – you want their product after all – so did you go to a search engine and type in the product name or did you go straight to the address bar at the top of your browser?
Well regardless of the search technique you used just remember that there are millions of people out there looking for your product and each of them uses their own search techniques. While there are two very distinct camps of searching techniques it is important to remember that there are two camps. So while you may not get a lot of people finding your site by typing in yourproduct.com, be aware that this is how some people search. Even if your main domain name is not yourproduct.com, it doesn’t mean you can’t launch this domain name as a sister site to your primary site, or simply have it direct people to your main site, capturing customers you may have lost to yourcompetitorsprodcut.com.
